The exhibition “Portraying Women” showcases the work of four diverse artists, each bringing their unique techniques and materials to explore the female face, form, and psyche through portraiture.

Jesse Howard captures the emotional and societal pressures that shape his subjects. Using charcoal, watercolor, and collage, his figures often appear stylized, reflecting inner narratives of the subject. The physicality of urban life is represented through materials such as newspaper clippings and receipts, bringing depth to his narrative of race, trauma, and survival.

Faith Humphrey Hill blends traditional knitting with digital drawing, symbolizing the interconnectedness of people. Her work explores the relationship between humanity and technology, weaving her own experience with medical implants into her pieces. Her portraits offer a soft yet edgy exploration of identity, using the symbolism of fiber and weaving with digital and mechanical methods to reflect the continuous flow of human connection.

Jeffrey Equality Brooks pushes the boundaries of mixed media with highly intricate portraits that combine automotive paints, metal flakes, gold leaf, resin, and broken glass. His innovative use of stencils and industrial materials results in vibrant and complex works, each built up from layers of unconventional substances, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Monica Brown delves into memory, personal mythology, and the weight of generational narratives in her portraits. Drawing inspiration from matrilineal stories, she explores the concept of genetic memory and healing. Her work is an inquiry into how memory shapes identity, with rich layers of symbolism that represent the ongoing journey of self-discovery and inherited strength.

Together, these artists offer powerful and distinct visions of womanhood, identity, and transformation through their innovative approaches to portraiture.
