In his acclaimed book “Making Space,” Mark Ballogg’s photographs capture the studios and workplaces of 93 Chicago artists. In November, ALMA Art & Interiors presents “Making Space: Art and Artist,” graphically illuminating how these artists’ environments influence and reflect their work. The exhibition presents 31 large-scale photographs from ’s side-by-side with works created in those studios by the artists who use them.

Opening reception is from 5pm until 9pm on Friday, Nov. 8, at ALMA, 3636 South Iron Street in Chicago, where Ballogg will discuss his approach to this project and the impact that “Making Space” has had on his own practice.

Created over the course of six years, the book’s photographs explore the studios of 93 Chicago artists, revealing them as not only a reflection of the artists’ methodology but also as a stimulus for their creativity. Ballogg—a renowned architectural photographer whose work itself qualifies as fine art—strove to portray the temperament of creative people as well as their “making spaces,” and to represent a wide diversity of artists in such aspects as gender, orientation, ethnic heritage and technique.

A series of events through Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, is being planned at ALMA. For more information, visit: almaartandinteriors.com/events. “Making Space” can be purchased at https://balloggphoto.com/making-space-book-2023.php.
