It’s A Sign: Queering the Gallery

The Oak Park Art League (OPAL) hosts its next multi-faceted exhibit, IT’S A SIGN: Queering the Gallery at its Carriage House Gallery and outdoor courtyard, at 720 Chicago Ave. Opening Friday August 9, this exhibition, which runs while the Democratic National Convention is in Chicago, will strive to uplift the artistry of image combined with text with an open call for artwork to be exhibited alongside selected LGBTQ art and artifacts from exhibition partner Gerber Hart Archives and banners from the Protest Banner Lending Library.
Throughout history signs, flyers, and handouts employing powerful images and text all serve to communicate ideas in impactful ways as tools of protest and of community building. In this moment of political importance, works from the Gerber Hart archive will be displayed alongside signs designed by artists participating in the open call exhibit to take a look at both the historical significance and the human perspective offered through the storytelling power of the sign.
In addition, OPAL invites the community to contribute to an outdoor, street-facing installation of re-imagined political yard signs. OPAL collected all the yard signs from the election earlier this year from in front of Oak Park Village Hall and makes them available to all creatives to transform into a personal message during this critical election year. Signs can be picked up free at OPAL and returned to be added to the installation throughout, culminating during the DNC, August 19 – 22, 2024.

A storytelling event with OPALGA+ and Gerber/Hart will be held Wednesday August 28, 7-9pm
An online exhibit will include all the submissions to this exhibit call.
