Jewlya’s collection of paintings explores the spectacle of girlhood. The artworks are a visual journal, each piece a page from the artist’s diary recording her experiences, feelings, and memories. She is inspired by the mythos of femininity and our culture’s obsession with youth. Using satire and clichés the artist pokes fun at the dogma of femininity, childhood, and their associated stereotypes. Through these paintings, she strives to provide validity and camaraderie to those who relate while also confronting those who cannot.
About the Artist:
Jewlya Sturtevant is a contemporary artist from Massachusetts who currently lives and works in the Chicago Metropolitan area. She is a figurative painter who works primarily in oil and acrylic on canvas. Her paintings are known for their visceral figures and narrative qualities. At the age of 18 she began studying art in Boston, Massachusetts and completed her BFA at Indiana University in 2022; where one of her paintings remains in the permanent collection of the university’s northwest campus. She has curated and participated in a wide range of exhibitions across the midwest.
