Artist Edith Copp presents Experiments in Manifestation, a playful solo exhibition that delves into the complexities of aesthetically capturing the non-binary body through artistic endeavor. The exhibition will be held at Positive Space Studios, located at 3520 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL 60647, from August 4th – 24th, with an opening reception on Friday, August 4th, from 7-10PM.

Experiments in Manifestation is an introspective exploration of gender identity and self-expression through sculpture, photography, and painting. Copp’s work, primarily focused on self-portraiture, draws from their own lived experiences as a non-binary individual, resulting in work that is deeply therapeutic and based in a philosophy of healing.

The exhibition showcases thought-provoking large-scale papier mâché sculptures, featuring casts of Copp’s face and body. By blurring the boundaries between the human form and abstract expression, Copp invites contemplation on a sense of self that is amorphic in nature yet contextualized in fantasy. Their art challenges viewers to question how outer appearances can be shaped to better express our undefinable internal identities.

Copp’s evocative large-scale paintings, such as Going with the Flow and Grass They, captivate audiences with their vibrant colors and dynamic compositions. Inspired by their early life spent in rural Connecticut, Copp’s works often incorporate lush vegetation, representing a connection to the natural landscape and their childhood.
