Bake Sale for Choice supporting Midwest Access Coalition!
@ Women & Children First Bookstore
5233 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640
Opening Saturday, May 13th, from 11AM - 2PM
What: A bake sale fundraiser for Midwest Access Coalition (MAC) outside Women & Children First from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. (or whenever we sell out!)
Why: Looking at the US map since Roe was overturned last year, you will see that every state touching Illinois is either heavily restricting abortion or has banned it. (A challenge to Wisconsin’s 1849 law banning almost all abortions that has been in effect since the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson last June is making its way to the state’s high court.) Further, moving south from Illinois borders to Texas, you will see with rare exception that reproductive autonomy has been banned. As a result, pregnant individuals in neighboring states and all over the country are flooding states like Illinois for a safe, protected, legal abortion.
We can do something. With your help, we can stand up for those who are in need.
MAC helps people traveling to, from and within the Midwest to access a safe and legal abortion.
According to MAC, here is what your donations can specifically afford:
• $10: a ride-share from the train station or hotel to the clinic.
• $25: a short distance bus or a train ticket.
• $40: food stipend for a day.
• $75: child care stipend for a day. (Six in 10 women who have abortions are already mothers.)
• $100: one night in a low cost hotel. • $450: round-trip airfare for those who have to travel out of region.
That’s a lot of treats! Please join us as bakers and/or buyers to offer bodily autonomy to people with uteruses. Lots of vegan and gluten-free options will be available.
Please message Marla at marla@veganstreet.com, Kathy at kitkat9301@gmail.com or Lisa at Ltanzer88@gmail.com to help with baking, volunteering or any questions.
