Sacred Harp
@ Comfort Station Logan Square
2579 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
Opening Tuesday, May 9th, from 6PM - 8PM
All are welcome to join and sing (or just watch) at our Logan Square Sacred Harp singing from 7:00p-9:00pm. No experience is necessary, and it is free. After a quick review of the basics of Sacred Harp singing for newcomers, we will sing from the 1991 Denson Edition of the Sacred Harp. Loaner books will be available, and there will be a break for socializing.
Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in New England and was later perpetuated and carried on in the American South of the United States. The name is derived from The Sacred Harp, a ubiquitous and historically important tunebook printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844 and has reappeared in multiple editions ever since. Sacred Harp music is performed a cappella (voice only, without instruments) and originated as Protestant Christian music, but today participants of all traditions and faiths enjoy gathering to sing in this traditional style. All backgrounds and experience levels are invited to join the Logan Square Sacred Harp Singers for this monthly meetup.
