In her groundbreaking work, TRAUMA AND RECOVERY: The Aftermath of Violence – from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror, renowned psychiatrist Judith L. Herman fundamentally changed our understanding of trauma.  When it was first published in 1992, The New York Times called the book “One of the most important psychiatric works to be published since Freud.”

In Trauma and Recovery, she traced the course of recovery from trauma in three stages, and in the decades since has contemplated a fourth and final stage of recovery: justice.  In TRUTH AND REPAIR: How Trauma Survivors Envision Justice (Basic Books, March 14^th, 2023), Herman seeks to answer the vital questions: How do we fix the system for survivors of sexual trauma? How do we repair the world for the survivors themselves – and for all women?

Herman ​commits the radical act of listening to survivors, something that would seem intuitively obvious but in fact is rarely done, and—recounting their stories—she offers an alternative vision of justice as healing for survivors and their communities.  She also draws on political theory, philosophy, social science, history, law, and psychology, and interviews attorneys, judges, advocates, educators, and mental health professionals to present a deeply researched call toward true justice for survivors.

Judith L. Herman, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Rachel Louise Snyder is the author of Fugitive Denim, the novel What We’ve Lost is Nothing, and No Visible Bruises, winner of a J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, the Hillman Prize, and the Helen Bernstein Book Award; and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Awards, LA Times Book Prizes, and Kirkus Prize. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, Slate, and elsewhere. A 2020-2021 Guggenheim Fellow, Snyder is a Professor of Creative Writing and Journalism at American University. She lives in Washington, DC.
