Artist Talk: Thursday, January 19th, 7:00pm
Julie Cowan’s recent works about Abraham Lincoln will be shown in the Perspective Gallery in Evanston. Motivated by an artist residency about Lincoln, Cowan researched and became entangled in the complicated ideas and person who was Abraham Lincoln. She set out to create a series of works to demonstrate the proposition that we can and should deeply think about, admire and always question our history. Cowan uses lithography and other drawing techniques in these works on paper, always starting with a photographic image.
The title of Julie Meridian’s series is Alice. Her project is an adventure into the realm of childhood and curiosity. But also, like Lewis Carroll’s themes in Alice in Wonderland, it’s an archetypal story about time and memory, about love and grief, about seeing the magic in ordinary things and abandoning all caution to take a risk.
Julie Meridian comes from a background in fine art and art education. She has worked in many media, but years ago she was seduced by the camera’s magical ability to capture a certain ephemeral quality of light and shadow that speaks to her themes of time and transience.
Meridian has exhibited in many local and national galleries, including Catherine Edelman Gallery, Chicago; Peggy Notebart Nature Museum, Chicago; PhotoPlace Gallery Middlebury, VT; and Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA. Her photographs have frequently been included in print and online publications, including LensWork Magazine, SHOTS Magazine, B & W Magazine, and Lenscratch. Her work has also been included in several books, including Series of Dreams, by Russell Joslin, City Creatures, by the Center for Humans and Nature, and Looking at Images, by Brooks Jenson. Her photographs are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston TX, the University of Illinois Chicago, and the Center for Humans and Nature.
