Candida Alvarez is an American artist widely regarded as one of her generation’s most highly innovative and experimental painters. She makes paintings and drawings that blur the boundaries between the conceptual, the intuitive and the abstract. Complex and vibrantly layered with combinations of abstract and figurative forms rich in pop, historical and modern art references, Alvarez’s works include drawings, paintings, prints and collages. She creates with materials as diverse as acrylic paint, colored pencils, enamel and embroidery thread on cloth, on various supports ranging from canvas to PVC, cotton napkins to vellum.

Alvarez’s work has been exhibited around the globe, from the Whitney Museum in New York to galleries and museums in Europe and South America. She has been a tenured professor of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1988 and is a recipient of numerous prestigious grants and awards.

Monique Meloche founded her eponymous art gallery in October 2000, with its debut exhibition ‘Homewrecker’ at Meloche’s home, and officially opened to the public in May 2001. Diverse and inclusive since its inception, the Monique Meloche Gallery promotes politically minded contemporary art, aiming to be a bellwether for artistic talents early or under-recognized in their careers. Working with an international group of emerging and established artists in all media, the gallery presents conceptually challenging installations in Chicago and at art fairs internationally, emphasizing curatorial and institutional outreach.

Meloche regularly collaborates with museums, including Crystal Bridges, the Spelman Museum of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art. She is widely respected for her ability to spot young talent, having worked with celebrated artists early in their careers, including Amy Sherald, Rashid Johnson and Ebony G. Patterson.
