Yaismel Alba Garib: smooth and painful
@ Fracas Art Gallery
Mana Contemporary Building, 2233 S Throop St. Studio 601 Chicago, IL 60608
Opening Friday, May 20th, from 4PM - 7PM
On view through Saturday, June 18th
Fracas Art Gallery Chicago is very happy to announce the opening of the solo show by the Cuban artist Yaismel Alba Garib entitled “smooth and painful.” You are invited to the opening reception on May 20, from 4 to 7 pm. The gallery is located in the Mana Contemporary building in studio 601.
Garib will show new egg tempera on Masonite panel paintings. The panels haunt while also arresting the viewer in their place. Garib pulls past to the present with his use of egg tempera paint. Installed next to each other, the panels capture the ghostly remnants of a memory, an icon, a vision, uncanny yet familiar. The viewer seeks completeness in an ever-incomplete and transitional time and place.
Please abide by Mana Contemporary’s COVID-19 precautions.

About the Artist
Yaismel Alba Garib (b. 1990, Matanzas, Cuba). MFA Performance in The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. BFA in Theater Studies, University of Arts Cuba. My work deals with both aspects—nothing-something—constantly changing places: completeness familiar with emptiness, taking from the world and giving back to the world. The work is a moment that is in transition, like the crossing between my body and my identities. In the work, the shapes want to merge to become figures, but, in reality, they do not.
