Valerie Carberry Gallery is pleased to present Ill Form and Void Full, a new series of photographs by Laura Letinsky (b. 1962). The artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, Ill Form and Void Full comprises photographs depicting lush spaces created when the elements of classical still life are flattened and reassembled with new intent.
Letinsky is a collagist of after-party leavings, selecting from and combining cut and torn images of food and table settings as the raw material for her final photographs. Through her process, the artist engenders a rare form of photographic authorship, one that confuses image with form, authenticity with reproduction, and ultimately imparts a uniquely self-aware type of longing. Before a finished photograph is taken, Letinsky contorts and remakes her selected scraps into small bands of intricate assemblages. Stripped of the connotations of advertising, these collage elements retain their magazine-spread saturated color but no longer evoke consumer desire. Such wants are supplanted through a different way of engaging with images: a lovingly skeptical viewpoint that renews the subject of its gaze by finding possibility in deterioration.
