What is landscape? Which environments yield welcome to whom? Reflections on Race and Contemporary Landscapes is a series of online artist interviews culminating in a panel discussion that dissects the interconnectedness of race and interpretations of landscape at large. Here, landscape can be thought of as a verb rather than a fixed entity; and interviewed artists Justin Favela, William Camargo, and Yvette Mayorga each offer unique perspectives on the built environment or landscapes of their own invention. Participants will engage with ideas of landscape theory, the “American white gaze” on landscape, and how we choose to navigate capitalism, segregation, and white supremacy in the environments around us.
This program is brought to you by Kale Serrato Doyen, Emmanuel Ortega, Ph.D., and LATITUDE.
By donating what you can to this program, you will receive access to 3 interviews with artists Yvette Mayorga, Justin Favela, William Camargo. Interviews moderated by Doyen and Ortega will be sent out weekly in November and will feature the work of each artist followed by a q&a discussing modern landscape art concerns and the choices artists make to combat white washed art histories. These interviews will culminate with an online panel discussion with the featured artists and moderators discussing how their ideas of landscape theory and white supremacy in the environments have changed, if at all, since our discussions in November.
This program is ideal for all ages, artists, students, educators, and individuals looking to broaden their interest in Landscape art and a Latinx lens. Please note that for participants 16 and under some topics might be sensitive and we encourage a parent present to answer questions and encourage dialogue.
Registration is required and limited.
