Multidisciplinary artist Vick Quezada, and writer and educator Catherine Damman, join us in conversation. Informed by Damman’s critical writing practice and Quezada’s engagement with ancient Aztec rites, the two discuss the entwined complexities of queer form and material histories, making art with found and living things, and the contested politics of land and Indigenous cosmologies.
VICK QUEZADA
Vick Quezada explores hybrid forms in Indigenous-Latinx history and the function of histories in contested lands. They incorporate found objects across mediums to reference the Aztec Indigenous beliefs that all beings are interconnected. Quezada’s work has been exhibited across the Northeast and featured in BOMB Magazine, Trans Studies Quarterly, and Remezcla. Quezada was an artist-in-residence at the NYU Latinx Project, and holds a BA from the University of Texas at El Paso and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
CATHERINE DAMMAN
Catherine Damman is a visiting assistant professor of art history at Wesleyan University and a core lecturer at Columbia University. Her writing on experimental dance, theater, film, music, and the visual arts can be found in Artforum, Bookforum, BOMB, 4 Columns, and Art in America, among other publications.
