Part of the Meeting at a Distance series

Join art critic Daniel R. Quiles in live interviews with artists from the Mana Contemporary community. Quiles explores each artist’s studio practice, recent projects, and where they are now in their work.

In this installment, Quiles joins Eritrean-born artist, researcher, and educator Dawit L. Petros. Petros completed the Whitney Independent Study Program, an MFA in visual art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Tufts University, a BFA in photography from Concordia University, and a BA in History from the University of Saskatchewan. Working with installations, photography, research, and extensive travels, his practice centers around a critical rereading of the relationship between African histories and European modernism.

Petros’s artistic language enables a metaphorically rich articulation of the fluidity of transnational experiences, and attendant issues of displacement, place-making, and cultural negotiation. Recent exhibition venues include the Biennial of Havana, Matanzas; Durban Art Gallery, South Africa; Huis Marseille Museum of Photography, Amsterdam; Lianzhou International Photo Festival, Lianzhou, China; Medina Galerie Mediatheque, Bamako, Mali; Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit; National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC; and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York.

Daniel R. Quiles is an art critic and associate professor of art history, theory and criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His academic research has focused on Argentinean conceptualism, as well as broader questions related to new media and politics in Latin American art.

MEETING AT A DISTANCE
Meeting at a Distance presents recurring conversations, started in a time of quarantine. The series features artists from the Mana Contemporary community, connecting with each other to discuss this new time, and how it has shifted their practice, process, and thinking.
