Making art can be a full-bodied, full-hearted experience. We read about how artists and writers use rituals in their process, that dancers or storytellers embody other worldly beings when they perform. These practices are sometimes rooted in spiritual traditions, which may have narratives that do not support queerness (how? Like which?). On the other hand, faith, witchcraft, horoscope and mythology does have a significant presence in queer culture. As queer artists, does faith impact the ways we think and create our art from, or do they exist separately from each other? Calling those who identify as both queer and non-queer to participate in a “fish-bowl” style conversation.
To learn about the “fish-bowl” model and participate, please join us on March 5 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Art Center. The event will be moderated by resident artist Veshalini Naidu.
About the artist:
Veshalini Naidu is a non-binary multidisciplinary artist who merges visual arts, poetry and theatre in their response to race, gender and sexuality in Malaysia. She is currently in residency at Hyde Park Art Center interrogating her ongoing series, “SKIN & FLOWERS,” a multipart, multidisciplinary project that responds and reimagines queer past, present and futures in Malaysia.
