An oppressive governmental regime can damage people, their jobs, their families and their lives. But that doesn’t mean it crushes their artistic spirit. Join the Museum of Contemporary Photography on Wednesday, April 11, at 6 p.m. for a film screening celebrating the artistic spirit that survives government oppression and inspires change.

The first film, Daria Menozzi’s “Before Ai Weiwei,” provides an intimate look into the life Chinese artist Ai Weiwei as he estranges himself from the country where he lives and positions himself as a global force in the art world. The second film, “Enemies of the People” directed by Thet Sambath and Rob Lemkin, interviews the men and women who perpetrated a major massacre in 1970s Cambodia, where Sambath lost his own family. The film follows his personal quest to uncover how and why the government carried out this chilling civilian genocide.

The screenings will take at the Hokin Gallery at 623 S. Michigan Ave. For more information, please visit the Museum of Contemporary Photography’s website at www.mocp.org.
