Joseph G. Cruz’s new solo exhibition, not a fact, still extremely real, swirls around representations of an iconic vista, the Matterhorn. Cruz plays with the concept of diffraction as a means of investigating how these representations move and intertwine with History, social paradigms, and epistemology.

Patterns in text systematically pulled from Edward Whymper’s journals chronicling the first ascent of the Matterhorn build a system of data. A mountain of data. From this data comes player piano scores, scroll drawings, photographs. Cruz employs the method of diffraction to investigate his subject matter, aligning his project’s investigation with those of quantum physicists.

The Matterhorn in reproduction, Cruz overlays romantic paintings with documentary photos and promotional images of Disney’s ride. The representations push and pull at each other, revealing fragments of each, intruding on conceptual stability.

Comfort Station is a contemporary art gallery and creative program space directly across from Chicago’s Logan Square Monument. The building was constructed in 1915 as a shelter for passengers awaiting trains on a long gone track. After lying dormant for decades, it was restored by Logan Square Preservation and reopened its doors in 2011 in its current incarnation.
