Derek Boshier first came to prominence as a student at the Royal College of Art in London in the early 1960s, with fellow students David Hockney, Allen Jones, R.B. Kitaj, and others in the British Pop Art movement. His “Ghosts of” series now includes Chicago, and these drawings were made specifically for this exhibition.
In the artist’s words:
The series “Ghosts of Chicago” follows from my series “Ghosts of Portsmouth” (my birthplace in England) and “Ghosts of Houston, Texas”. Both were shown in those cities. For Chicago I researched and selected people I want to include to give a diverse range. In “Ghosts of Chicago” it is the first time I have included people still alive as they are contemporary and very important to the city.
