Xavier Hughes [www.xavierh.com] is an interdisciplinary artist who will be interpreting samples taken from the audience, instrumentals for popular songs will be reproduced. Then, the deconstruction and experimentation with the aforementioned instrumentals will take place to create compositions within this sonic event as a whole. A laptop, microphone, midi keyboard, and DAW will be used to accomplish this. The entire process will be heard from surrounding speakers. White blankets will wrap the surrounding pillars. The process will take place 2 separate times throughout the night.
Alex van Dorp [www.alexvandorp.com] is a hybrid artist/designer working in Chicago whose performance, 12 trembling strokes, will take the form of two mounted 24×48 drawings. The drawings explore space, form, and representation with reference to German Chancellor Angela Merkel (the subject of the drawings) and the artist’s relationship to trembling hands. The work will be made with chalk drawings over acrylic on canvas.
Amanda Taves [www.amandataves.com] explores states of perception using multisensory interdisciplinary projects. Focusing on the point at which the commonplace becomes uncanny, the photographs, videos, audio narration, and investigative forensic procedures employed in my projects expose the history between object and action: the latent evidence of interaction. She frequently collaborates with forensic professionals, city officials, and community organizations in her practice. Prior to receiving her BFA in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Taves cultivated a visual literacy program at The Night Ministry and interned with Industry of the Ordinary. Her work has been curated by the New York Museum of Modern Art and she has participated as a panelist and visiting instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited nationally at venues including the Phoenix Museum of Art and Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Taves is the recipient of various awards including a Chicago Cultural Center CAAP Grant, Goldman Sachs Scholarship, and an Endsley Fellowship, among others. She is a 2020 University of Illinois at Chicago MFA candidate and currently resides in Chicago with her husband and parrot. Taves’ performance, The Weight of Alder Wright, will explore the psychological and emotional impact of opioid addiction using installation and sound performance.
Industry of the Ordinary [www.industryoftheordinary.com] are Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson.
> bio: Through sculpture, text, photography, video and performance, Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) are dedicated to an exploration and celebration of the customary, the everyday, and the usual. Their emphasis is on challenging pejorative notions of the ordinary and, in doing so, moving beyond the quotidian. Industry of the Ordinary were formed in 2003. The two artists who make up this collaborative team, Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson, have long histories as visual and performative artists. They bring complementary sensibilities to their activities. Their projects exist in temporal terms but have also been conceived to function on the web site associated with the collaboration, http://www.industryoftheordinary.com. They have had solo shows at multiple venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and, more recently, a major mid-career survey at the Chicago Cultural Center that was received with much acclaim. They also performed at the opening of the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009, as well as making work for a wide variety of private, semi-private and public settings, nationally and internationally, both temporary and permanent.
