Lorraine Peltz: Light in the Darkness

@ the gallery at a + c architects

4840 Main St, Skokie, IL 60077

Opening Sunday, March 16th, from 2PM - 4PM

On view through Friday, April 25th

Making art is an act of hope.

For over four decades Lorraine Peltz has been creating paintings that suggest light emerging from the dark. Through her deft manipulation of vibrant colors and evocative imagery emerging from darkened grounds, Peltz reminds us of the duality in our constant struggle to be.  The persistence of light as embodied in rich chandeliers, sustains the hope and even the pleasure we must all seek amidst our more painful and challenging moments. Peltz’s paintings allow us to temporarily escape and conjure up a bright place, filled with the promise of imagination.

This selection of Peltz’s paintings presents a range of painterly languages and imagery, including signs and symbols culled from both a personal and public iconography, and a broad array of methods of application–brush painting, spray paint, and stencils. One finds fields of flowers, geometric patterns, images of painted lips, menacing crows, dancing legs, chandeliers, and more. These works are a result of the artist’s careful constructions as well as the serendipity of a well-honed painting practice.

Each of Lorraine Peltz’s paintings offer the viewer an opportunity for slow looking, a generosity of ideas, and ultimately a place of joy.
