Cuscatlismo refers to a new understanding of Salvadoran identity. The name for this ongoing project comes from the word Cuscatlán, the name of the lands we now call El Salvador, derived from the Nahua language, meaning “land of jewels.” Being both Salvadoran and American, Isaac Díaz has used this aspect of identity to explore the importance of place and the desire to create a place. El Salvador often conjures up images of civil war, corruption, and migration among lush jungle. This image has often led Díaz to seek out what is not included in this image, to discover what this small country hides and preserves.
Through clay and found objects, Díaz questions identity and the effects place has on it. Cuscatlismo is a way to show the world the profound histories, subtleties, and various perspectives of El Salvador.
Isaac Díaz currently lives and works in Oklahoma City. He graduated with a BFA in ceramics and sculpture in 2021. His work has been exhibited in Oklahoma, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Dallas, and now Chicago.
