Smart Salon: Art and Infinity, with Dr. W.J.T. Mitchell
@ Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago
5550 S Greenwood Ave, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Tuesday, January 28th, from 5:30PM - 7PM
Fascination with the infinite seems hardwired in human consciousness, finding expression in art and literature, science and religion. But not all infinities are the same. This lecture will explore several varieties of infinity as they are realized in the visual arts, from William Blake’s Minute Particulars to J. M. W. Turner’s sublime landscapes to Antony Gormley’s Infinite Cube, now on display at the Smart Museum. The lecture will conclude with the story of this work’s origin in the visionary geometry of artist Gabriel Mitchell. Free, register online.
