The Politics of Collage
@ Theatre Y
3611 W Cermak Rd, Chicago, IL 60623
Opening Saturday, November 2nd, from 4 PM - 8 PM
On view through Friday, January 31st
An exhibition of collage work by students from the Prison and Neighborhood Arts Project held at Stateville Prison taught by Reginald BoClair and Ruth Poor. This exhibition uses the art of collage to analyze and critique principles relating to power and status in society. Topics range from race, gender, identity politics, class/economics, consequences of colonialism/capitalism et al. We collectively studied readings that address the role of politics and collage, theories of making, and modern contemporary history of the medium. Inspiration taken from artist such as Romare Bearden, Jiri Kolar, Wangechi Mutu, and Lorna Simpson, informed us as artist to consider ‘meaning and making’ and ways to use art for social change, advocacy, and resistance.
