Iria do Castelo is a European multidisciplinary artist based on the northwest coast of Spain. She develops art projects in which drawing, sculpture, installation and scenography converge. Her work is deeply influenced by the overflowing nature of the place where she lives, Galicia. Her work often derives from traditional tales, superstitious beliefs and pagan cults, in which the union between the femininine and the natural takes on special importance.
During her residency at the John David Mooney Foundation, Iria do Castelo produced a body of work inspired by her first experiences in America and the nature of Lake Michigan. For this exhibition, she unfolds a symbolic universe in the form of post-Anthropocene fable. In this “Arcana Natura” the visual narrative is configured as a forest trough which the visitor moves in a web of relations between the pieces. The exhibition space becomes a place of encounter and transformation, where the edges of two worlds, the real and the imaginary, mingle giving rise to new possibilities.
