The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is honored to present Puerto RicanEquation: mixed media works, video y El Espiritu Santo, an exhibition by the renowned artist Juan Sánchez. Through his powerful mixed media collages, works on paper, printmaking, and video, Sánchez weaves together layers of paint, photography, appropriated images, and text to explore complex themes of Puerto Rican identity, colonialism, and cultural heritage.

His work engages viewers with a multi-layered narrative that fuses Judeo-Christian iconography, African signals, Caribbean Taíno petroglyphs, and urban symbols, contextualizing them within a contemporary Caribbean and urban perspective. Sánchez’s art is a reflection on the tumult, resilience, and aspirations of the Puerto Rican people, offering a poignant commentary on the enduring struggle for self-determination and the impacts of colonial history.

In Puerto Rican Equation, Sánchez reminds us that while we cannot be free from our past, we must never forget our history. It is only by acknowledging this continuity that we can pave the way to our destiny. Through his art, Sánchez envisions a journey towards freedom, where the light at the end of the tunnel is illuminated by the spirit of resistance and hope.

Join us in celebrating this profound exhibition that speaks to the cultural, political, and historical journey of the Puerto Rican people. The struggle continues, but the spirit remains unbroken.
