Join Lois Taylor Biggs, Rice Curatorial Fellow in Native American Art, for a conversation reflecting on two works in our galleries devoted to American art: a basket by Kelly Church (Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Pottawatomi/Ottawa) titled Sustaining Traditions—Digital Teachings and Gertrude Abercrombie’s painting The Past and the Present.
What might these works say about perceptions of time and relationships to place? What role does place play in our own experiences of the past, present, and future? Explore these and other questions on land, memory, and modernism during this special gallery program.
about the speaker
Lois Taylor Biggs (Cherokee Nation/White Earth Ojibwe) is a Chicago-based writer, curator, and art historian. Lois is interested in developing frameworks for Indigenous art history and writes on questions of abstraction, temporality, fragmentation, and repair in Indigenous art. She is the Rice Curatorial Fellow in Native American Art in the Art Institute of Chicago’s Arts of the Americas department and holds an MA in Social History of Art from the University of Leeds. Lois is currently the curator-in-residence at the Center for Native Futures and has published critical art writing in C Magazine, Momus, and Forge Project’s online journal Forging.
