Lecture: Capturing the Electric Pulse—Georgia O’Keeffe and the Stieglitz Circle

Georgia O’Keeffe shaped the trajectory of American modernism. From experimentations in her early career to the iconic organic forms she is known for, her paintings explore the emerging landscape of America. The Art Institute’s The Shelton with Sunspots provides a striking example of how O’Keeffe, inspired by the dazzling New York City skyline and the rise of photography, captured a swiftly modernizing city. Working alongside fellow artists and writers in the circle of her husband, the photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz, including John Marin, Marsden Hartley, Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, and Helen Torr, O’Keeffe reflected the electric pulse of 20th-century life.
Join curator and professor Annie Morse as she examines how O’Keeffe and other modern American artists of the Stieglitz circle captured New York’s dynamic cityscape.
Annie Morse is an independent art educator and curator who has worked with the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hyde Park Art Center, Columbia College Chicago, and 3Arts, among other organizations. She holds a master’s in 20th-century art history, theory, and criticism from the School of the Art Institute and a master’s in library and information science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
