As global trade and colonial expansion accelerated in 18th century Europe, the garden became a site where disparate species and cultural references were assembled under the guise of simulating nature and the world. Exotic birds and flowers, aromatic fruits, and exquisite rock formations entered landscape design, bringing the foreign into domestication. The garden induced new fantasies through its dazzling transplants.
Fengzee Yang and Jonathan Korotko approach the garden as a site of artificiality and pleasure through spiritual and historical narratives, shaping our perceptions. Through their manipulation of form and material, they parody 18th-century ideals of the garden and reconfigure the power dynamics that underlie its seductive facade. By cloaking and distorting images, objects, and landscapes, they challenge viewers to reconsider the desires that animate these constructed environments.
Rockeries by the Garden offers a space for contemplation and critique, where new intimacies between aesthetic idioms can be forged.
