Necessary Illusions exhibits the collage, painting, and video work of Meg Eastwood and Mitchell Bueno. Their work utilizes the visual language of twentieth century print culture, public domain film, and archival photography to critique U.S.-American political and cultural narratives.
Meg Eastwood’s work explores photographs and press clippings from the Transgender Digital Archives to create multi-media paintings that elevate the history of gender expansive presentation and identity. The work intends to show queerness as an aspect of human experience throughout time as opposed to a modern phenomenon.
Mitchell Bueno’s work takes on the visual aesthetics and familiar tropes of mid-century television and print culture, removing the images from their original uses and recombining them to challenge the passive consumerism or political violence they encouraged.
