James Nelson’s artistic journey began on the Southside of Chicago, where he discovered his passion for painting at a tender age. His inaugural piece, a portrait of his mother, displayed an exquisite attention to detail, capturing her essence with precision. Encouraged by her words, “Draw everything you see, son,” Nelson embarked on a lifelong exploration of portraiture. Throughout his artistic evolution, he has skillfully integrated radiant colors and geometric elements into his compositions, infusing them with vitality and depth.

“Transcendence: A Journey of Reclamation and Renewal” is Nelson’s latest body of work that comes off of a 3 year hiatus from the art world. He embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery and reclamation. This period, marked by loss of employment, depression, anxiety, doubt, inadequacy and fear, ultimately led him to a pivotal realization: “the paths I traversed were devoid of true fulfillment.” This new body of work is Nelson’s re-emergence not only into the art world, but also into embracing his own life journey. Each piece is a powerful portrait; combining backgrounds of vibrant color, shapes and fabric. The works are representative of the artist’s own journey, each forging a path towards healing, enlightenment and artistic rebirth. “Through my work, I invite others to embark on their own voyage of self-discovery, to embrace the infinite potential within, and to forge a deeper connection with the master creator that resides within us all. Together, let us journey towards a brighter, more enlightened future, guided by the light of our collective spirits and the boundless wisdom of the universe.” – Nelson

James Nelson’s artistic prowess was evident from a young age, earning him accolades starting at just 12 years old. His education at Westinghouse Vocational High School, focusing on Commercial Art, laid the foundation for his successful career. Winning the All City State Awards Portfolio in 1997 further affirmed his talent. Continuing his journey, Nelson pursued Graphic Design at Illinois State University, honing his skills and expanding his creative horizons. His work has graced esteemed and prestigious venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and various galleries across Chicagoland.

Transitioning from freelancing to entrepreneurship, Nelson founded Soulful Artistry, a platform dedicated to fostering creativity and collaboration among artists. Influenced by the Renaissance Era and Expressionist movement, his style melds elements of Realism with Street/Urban Art, creating dynamic compositions that captivate viewers. Nelson’s penchant for portraiture shines through in his use of vibrant colors and geometric motifs, breathing life into his creations. His latest body of work delves into themes of humanity, spirituality, and African American culture, reflecting his profound respect for existence and the interconnectedness of all things.
