Connor Young: ATAXOPHOBIA

@ WHIM at Stage 7773

1225 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60657

Opening Wednesday, May 22nd, from 7PM - 9PM

On view through Saturday, May 25th

WHIM Chicago is expanding their visual artist series with the opening of a dedicated gallery space. WHIM is an immersive walk-through experience where all art forms come together – paintings, music, sculpture, street art, and live performance. The inaugural exhibition is Connor Young’s Ataxaphobia, on view from April 24th through May 25th, 2024. Through vibrant colors and textures, this photographic exhibition explores the juxtaposition of Young’s conservative roots with explicit gay nightlife.

WHIM Chicago, a nonprofit dedicated to putting local artists back to work, will continue to celebrate Chicago-based visual artists through this expansion. Lifting traditional restrictions, artists are permitted to adjust and change the gallery to suit their exhibition. Young intends to paint the gallery walls bright colors to immerse the viewer into the chaos of the themes explored in his work.

“In Ataxaphobia, I use a range of overstimulating textures and colors that suck you into the gay subconscious,” said Connor Young, the artist. “This show focuses on embracing the chaos that builds mentally in conservative spaces where queer expression is not widely accepted.”

Ataxaphobia is organized by WHIM at Stage 773, and curated by Anne Shook.
