“Artists have a unique opportunity to make a difference . . . to look and work toward the future. Most people, by the nature of their work, have to think about what’s happening now, to serve as kind of custodians of our culture; but artists have the opportunity and responsibility to be forward-looking. We have the job of creating new ideas and visions for the future, and I’m pleased to be a part of that.” – Richard Hunt (1935-2024)
Inspired by the words of his friend and sculptor, Richard Hunt, Robert Paige seeks to support the ideas and inventions of other artists. Over the years, Paige has amassed a group of makers, who he deeply admires and respects for their advice, commitment to craftsmanship and interest in a community aesthetic. The artist/designer describes this circle of artists with whom he discusses ideas and materials as his “parapluie”, the french word for umbrella. It is also a symbol of creative community for Robert Paige. This exhibition highlights functional and two dimensional artwork by artists selected by Paige.
The idea of the Parapluie is based on the Omega Workshops (London 1913-1919), an applied arts company that sold objects and fabrics by artists and designers led to erase boundaries between decorative art and fine art with a modernist aesthetic. In conjunction with his solo exhibition, Paige invited these artists to present their work that relates to his enthusiasm for color, pattern, and purpose-driven design. There is no hierarchy between art, craft, design, and function in this exhibition. Instead, the artists included in Parapluie uphold the idea that beauty should be accessible to everyone and is all around us.
