Draw and Exchange: Connecting with Others Through Visual Language
12-1PM

Express yourself through flowing forms and repetitive marks as we share a conversation through art materials. In this workshop led by Amanda Mulcahy, participants will be guided through their own intuitive drawing process. What will emerge remains to be seen as we create and explore our own visual vocabularies in community with each other. Participants may exchange works with the artist at the conclusion of this expressive drawing workshop. No drawing experience necessary to participate.

About Amanda Mulcahy

Amanda Mulcahy is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. She is guided by her desire to understand how natural processes unfold, and how our daily lives get embedded into these systems. Informed by how the earth continuously churns inert materials into complex forms, she creates vibrant soft sculptural pieces through iterations of building up surfaces and breaking down materials. Each step of the process leaves its mark on the work as it echoes through a series of permutations. In her resulting works, she unearths ways elemental marks and materials can grow in complexity, through dynamic changes. Also inspired by her young children’s drawing and storytelling, Amanda has been exploring how we use mark making to make sense of the world around us and to record memories. Her work distills these interactions and playfully translates them into colorful abstractions in painting, collage, and fiber art.

Let’s express our feelings through the process of felting! Join Lucia Calderon Arrieta in a workshop where you will be invited to contribute to a collaborative felting project all about our feelings – the ones we hide, the ones we wear on our sleeves, and the ways we can share them with others.

About Lucia Calderon Arrieta

Lucia learned to sew from Abuelita and learned to call it Fiber Art from Academia. They were raised by South American immigrants in the American South. Calderon Arrieta holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BFA from Birmingham-Southern College. They have worked as an educator in many capacities, including their current roles at The Art Institute of Chicago and Lillstreet Art Center. They previously held roles as part-time lecturer at Chicago State University, teaching artist at the Allied Media Conference, and facilitator for incarcerated artists with the Youth Arts Alliance!. Calderon Arrieta has shown work in venues including The Hyde Park Arts Center (Chicago, IL), Heaven Gallery (Chicago, IL), The South Haven Center for the Arts (South Haven, MI), Durbin Gallery (Birmingham, AL), Flophouse Gallery (Berkeley, MI), and SOFA 2014 (Chicago, IL).

Spring Renewal Rituals: Gardening and Composting with Holly Cahill and Alexandra Antoine

In this workshop, Alexandra Antoine and Holly Cahill will share some of their knowledge on foraging for natural dyes, gardening, and composting inspired by their works in Beneath the Visible. In anticipation of Spring’s arrival, participants will be guided through reflecting, writing, and collage-making activities that engage with the transformation occurring through the change of seasons. In the process, we will consider the importance of daily rituals, some plants that can be grown and nurtured in your own garden to support the local ecosystem and an artistic practice as well as symbolically planted in our own lives. As supplies allow, compost will be harvested from vessels in the exhibition and shared with those that attend.

About Holly Cahill

Holly Cahill is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist working between painting, drawing, fibers, sculpture, print, and collage. Her process-oriented abstractions weave together elements of the fantastic found at the heart of our domestic and shared environments. Her work has been shown at 65GRAND, Epiphany Center for the Arts, Mana Contemporary, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, Chicago Artists Coalition, Heaven Gallery, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, D Gallery, The Franklin, Hyde Park Art Center, (Chicago, IL), DEMO Project (Springfield, IL), Eckert Art Gallery (Millersville, PA), Woskob Family Gallery (State College, PA), and nationalmuseum (Berlin, Germany), among others. She has been an artist in residence at Chicago Artists Coalition (Chicago, IL), Spudnik Press Cooperative (Chicago, IL), Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT), 8550 Ohio (Chesterhill, OH), Banff Centre (Banff, Canada), and Ox-Bow (Saugatuck, MI). Cahill received her MFA from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati (2004) and a BFA from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University (1998).

Her work has been featured in luxe Interiors + Design, New American Paintings, Chicago Tribune, InsideWithin, and The Comp Magazine, among others. Cahill has curated several exhibitions, often in collaboration with others, at Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Chicago, IL), Satellite Art Show (Miami, FL), The Glass Curtain Gallery, Columbia College (Chicago, IL), Weinberg Newton Gallery (Chicago, IL), TSA_PDF, Mana Contemporary (Chicago, IL) and SCOTTY (Berlin, Germany). She was a Director and Co-Director in Chicago of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, an artist-run, non-profit network of gallery spaces with locations in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Greenville, SC from 2020-2023.

About Alexandra Antoine

Alexandra Antoine is an interdisciplinary visual artist and cultural apprentice based in Chicago, IL. Her work acknowledges the influences of her Haitian culture and interest in portraiture, food, farming and physical labor in traditional artistic practices of the African diaspora. She honors the different forms and functions of her work in the process of her vision coming into fruition.

She received her BFA in Fine Arts and Arts Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
