Marten Katze: THE RUINS
@ Epiphany Center for the Arts
201 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60607
Opening Friday, February 2nd, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Friday, March 22nd
In Marten Katze’s solo exhibit The Ruins, he shows a new series of works in direct comparison to older panels. Glass collages featuring striking red and gold flames, lightning strikes, and golden rings of eyes give way to a calmer, green-toned rage. The new series steps away from abstracted inner turmoil and fantasy of oppressive institutions going up in flames, towards an examination of the real-life terror of living under those forces. Throughout the construction of these panels, the artist asked himself: “Where do you feel trapped? Where do you feel safe? Is there really such a thing? Who is going to help you? And what is the cost of safety?”. The classic form of stained glass combined with less conventional designs incorporating salvaged glass from antique windows, as well as newly painted pieces draw the viewer in, mesmerizing and pushing them to question their relationship to power through the plain, powerful language of light and color.
Marten Katze is a queer 29-year-old multi-disciplinary artist who has been working with stained glass for over ten years. He learned stained glass as a craft, acquiring skills as he worked at Colorsmith Stained Glass. He has experience in restoration, repair, design, and construction of new windows, but specializes in collage and glass painting. Outside of his glass work, Katze has acted in film, fronted a band, and organized many a punk show.
