The show title is taken from Lou Reed’s 1972 song “Perfect Day.” The lyric “Just a perfect day” can be interpreted as an idealized moment or experience, reflecting the aspirations and hopes of both the artists and viewers. The figurative paintings in the show reflect the intersections of queer existences and the corporeal and affective terrains across which the artists in the show traverse. The paintings add to larger conversations about the future of contemporary queer figurative painting and the complexities of narratives that queer artists de/construct every day through their art practices.

The title of the show “Just a perfect day” can simply be interpreted as the celebration of what all of us strive for within a world full of constraints on our bodies and identities: “JOY.” Despite facing systemic and cultural barriers and oppressions, the artists in the show continue to create, thrive, and find moments of joy through art. These are queer artists who don’t take joy for granted—because they can’t. They, like other contemporary queer artists, strive to create these “perfect days” in spite of the real-world craziness that surrounds their lives. We are thrilled to facilitate one piece of the larger work that goes into the creation of “perfect days” for these artists.
