In Focus: Recent works by Moritz Kellerman, Mark Palmeri and Lou Pierozzi

The exhibition focuses on three faculty members of Oakton’s art department and their recent work. Moritz Kellerman’s work explores intangibles and the understanding of what one sees. Viewing it necessitates meditative and contemplative observation from the viewer. Kellerman’s work does not seek to provide tangibility or answers; rather, it is an expression of color creation and how we understand the seen.

According to Mark Palmeri, his most “recent” paintings (2018-2024) were done in the future. His earlier paintings (2012 – 2017) were completed in the approximate dates as stated. Some of his work (2005-2011) was done during Palmeri’s second adult childhood. And almost everything dated before 2005 was perpetrated by “his nameless, deceased, alter ego/doppelganger/friend.”

For over 30 years, ceramic artist and chair of Oakton’s art department Lou Pierozzi has been using the potter’s wheel to create his artistic works. In a retrospective fashion, Pierozzi is exhibiting several series of work. His “metal series” was created out of his childhood memories of exploring old, abandoned mines and metal-riveted equipment. With its bright colorful glazes, his “Aqua Series” was inspired by seeing the beautiful turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea for the first time as an adult. In his “Mingei Series,” Pierozzi’s earliest artwork was inspired by the Japanese folk pottery movement known as Mingei.

The Public Reception takes place on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 5 – 8 p.m.

Viewings take place from Thursday, February 8, 2024 – Friday, March 22, 2024, during regular museum hours.
