College Art Association Annual Conference
CAA (the College Art Association) returns to Chicago for its 112th Annual Conference next week (February 14–17) to convene thousands of art historians, art practitioners, and other visual arts professionals at a moment when the arts and humanities are increasingly threatened due to departmental closures, museum cutbacks, and censorship. CAA, as the preeminent international leadership organization in the visual arts, promotes these arts and their understanding through advocacy, intellectual engagement, and a commitment to the diversity of practices and practitioners.
Over 275 conference sessions, workshops, and events will address a vast array of scholarship and practice ranging from Early Islamic Art and Architecture and Latin American Border Art to DEAI strategies for teaching and exhibiting art under censorship, as well as resources for emerging professionals. Program highlights include a keynote address during Convocation from Shelly C. Lowe, Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the CAA Distinguished Scholar session
honoring Chicago-based S. Hollis Clayson, and the Annual Artists Interviews, featuring two Chicago-based artists: photographer Dawoud Bey in conversation with Elisabeth Sherman from the International Center of Photography and multimedia artist Anne Wilson in conversation with Elissa Auther from the Museum of Arts and Design.
CAA has invited Chicago’s City Colleges to the conference this year to promote greater access to the organization’s career-advancing resources. “We are delighted to have begun a partnership with the Chicago City College system. All visual arts
students require professional development opportunities,” says Meme Omogbai, CAA Executive Director. “The skills cultivated in art programs such creative thinking, resilience, curiosity, and technological literacy are precisely those 21st
century careers will require. We aim to ensure that all visual arts students receive the support they deserve for rewarding and sustainable futures.”
The partnership with the Chicago City College system is emblematic of the organization’s work to expand access as CAA promotes innovative programs and resources to support the visual arts and academia at a critical time in arts education.
