ARTIST STATEMENT
Throughout human history, the bird has been used as a classical symbol of freedom. My current series borrows this concept and combines it with the human body to convey a message of my idealized aspiration for people: to be vulnerable, liberated, and courageous. These ‘Bird People’ are actors in playful, often autobiographical, anecdotes of heroines and nomads who conquer faraway places and touch the Divine. All the while, their indiscernible and uncanny faces express the painful, and at times frightening, edge that comes with being alive.

BIO
Julia Signe Fuhler is a Norwegian American painter, photographer, and illustrator based out of Chicago, IL. As a young adult, she traveled and spent extended time in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Central America to further her studies and work experiences. In high school, she was selected for the 2016 national AP Art Gallery exhibition in Washington D.C. for her concentration on women around the world and their landscapes- both geographic and psychic. She received her BFA in painting from SAIC in 2022 and is currently pursuing artist residencies internationally before continuing her education at a graduate level. Most recently, one of her oil paintings, ‘Rechazada’, was added into the collection of Beth Rudin DeWooody.
