Light in the Darkness: Opening Reception
Featuring the work of Jan Brandt and Amy Hanks
Curated by Monica J. Brown
Jan Brandt:
Seeds of hope have been planted through my artwork. Inspired by my dreams and memories, my paintings and fiber art sprout abundantly in vivid color and pattern. My work is a testament to resiliency, a reminder that hope can be restored even as we struggle with despair. A world of imagined flora connects with my love of nature. Being in nature is a connection with spirituality for me. In my dreamscapes, I fly over fantastical landscapes, where color and scale are magical. I remain a young girl in these dreams. As I grow older, my memories of childhood become clearer and provide insight and encouragement. I nurture my connection to nature and my memories of dreams which leads to hope, motivation and growth.
Amy Hanks:
As a practicing artist-teacher, I am captivated by the essence of change and how perspectives evolve. I seek to understand small and large moments in life as I layer, erase, refine, and polish my pieces in dialogue with imagery. I collage a beautiful mythology from events, aspirations, and memories.
My work currently explores the concept of belief, focusing on times when loved ones embark on paths I can’t follow but must witness. Through challenging times, I learn unexpected lessons and experience unwelcome aspects of life. Yet, in these journeys into the unknown, my aspiration remains simple—to hold onto hope for the lost to be found.
