Andrew Maxbauer: Music for violin, field recordings, and the surrounding acoustic environment

Music for violin, field recordings, and the surrounding acoustic environment is an hour-long work that lies at the limit of audibility, incorporating violin, surrounding environmental sounds, and field recordings gathered from the immediate vicinity of Tritriangle. Sound sources remain extremely quiet throughout the performance as they slowly transform the acoustic presence of the performance space. Field recordings will be captured in the same timeframe as the performance on days prior and played back during the performance through six speakers placed throughout the space. Tritriangle offers an ideal intimate listening space for this project where environmental sounds can subtly become a component of this intricate listening experience.
Due to the project’s dependence on the surrounding acoustic environment and the fruitful potential for variability, this work will be presented on two different occasions, October 20 between 6-8p, and October 22 between 11a-1p.
∆ Andrew Maxbauer is a composer whose work embraces fleeting and transitory sonic experiences that often lie at the limit of audibility; involving instruments, field recordings, the presence of the performance space, and the surrounding acoustic environment.
His compositions have been presented internationally at festivals, including June in Buffalo, Kalvfestivalen, and the Saint Petersburg International New Music Festival. He has worked with ensembles and performers such as airborne extended, Ensemble Dal Niente, Longleash, mdi ensemble, Mimitabu, Mivos Quartet, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Ensemble Multilatérale, and Talea Ensemble.
Andrew received his Ph.D. in Music Composition and Technology from Northwestern University. He currently resides in Chicago.
