Adriana Poterash: SURREAL WORLD OF ALLIANCES
@ Evanston Art Center
1717 Central St. Evanston, IL 60201
Opening Sunday, September 17th, from 1PM - 4PM
On view through Sunday, October 29th
Adriana Poterash is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Evanston. She was born in Romania, spent her childhood in St Petersburg, and immigrated to the US in her late teens. She received her BS in Chemistry at the UIC, Associate in Fine Arts at the Harper College, and her BFA in Studio Arts with concentration on Painting and Ceramics at the SAIC.
Her paintings are a surreal world of uncommon alliances converging into unexpected unions. The collapsing perspectives, deteriorating images revealing hidden layers underneath are to reflect the fragility of our physical world and complexity of our memories. Integrating traditional oil painting with phototransfers, 3-D materials and new media, she achieves a seamless image of altered reality to provoke a thought or an emotional impulse in a viewer.
The materiality of textures make her paintings to be truly appreciated in physical viewing vs digital – it has to be a personal experience face-to-face. Most titles are simplified to remove her ego and to allow the viewer freedom to interpret the image according to one’s senses. Experiencing and interpreting the complexity of our synapses through art is one of the most precious human experiences.
