Disposophobia: the selfish acquisition of items and failure to use or discard them.
Though a rather harsh definition, the reality of our consumerist habits is a harsh one. Disposophobia, more commonly known as hoarding disorder affects an estimated of 2-6%, (1.6M – 5.5M), of the American population according to the American Psychiatry Association. It can be hard to understand how an individual can let so much trash and junk pile up in their space, but to them it can be hard to understand how others throw everything away. To many hoarders, everything still has potential use or value. It’s in this sentiment the exhibition Disposophonia is focused around; the inherent value or potential that every object contains, and the absurdity it takes to hold on to everything in hopes of finding its value.
