The work is live streamed on Twitch, and we are also open for in-person visits by appointment. Please email birdshowchicago@gmail.com to arrange a visit. Address, accessibility information, and other details will be provided once your appointment is confirmed.
Rosen writes: “Throughout the exhibition at Bird Show, viewers—both human, Avian, and more-than-human—will engage in interspecies rituals of consumption visually and sensorially. The first casting is made of recycled pewter appropriated from sellers on eBay, marketing to individuals interested in making homemade bullets. The second spherical form is cast in birdseed and powdered with cayenne pepper to blaze like the Sun. Over time, the birdseed will melt and morph, while the pewter disk will be enriched with a patina of outdoor elements and energetic presences. With this work, I hope to invite space for interspecies care and sculptural collaboration using agential materials to meditate on cycles of death, consumption, and transformation across the boundaries of species.”
D Rosen is a semi-nomadic artist who is presently living on the stolen and occupied lands of the Council of the Three Fires, commonly known as Chicago, IL. They operate from the position that questions of animality are not binary but rather a tangle of ecologies and richly complicated identities framed by culture. Rosen attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2018, received an MFA from the University of Chicago in 2013, and a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2011. They exhibit and publish internationally. Recent residencies include a partnership with USF Verftet and S12 (Bergen, Norway) focused on glass casting and queer vampire Bats. They have upcoming exhibitions at Exgirlfriend Berlin (Berlin, Germany) and Bird Show (Chicago, IL), as well as a residency at SÍM (Reykjavík, Iceland). In 2024, their text titled “Gorgets: Trans Hummingbirds and Iridescent Echoes” will be published in the “Queering Nature” issue of Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture.
Bird Show (established 2021) is an outdoor project space in Chicago. This rotating exhibition space features works by artists interested in engaging with Chicago’s flora and fauna with sanctuary-like sculptures or installations. Objects displayed do not have to be functional but special consideration is given to projects that provide amenities for the local ecosystem.
