“MINI MEMORIES” Artist, DAVID GISTA
ABOUT THE SHOW: FROM THE ARTIST
The motivation for painting on floppy disks is comparable to writing a journal, except that these are not words, but snapshots of life, tapping into individual and collective memories. By recycling an obsolete memory device into a miniature painting, I like to play with paradoxes; «new» technology versus old technology, or how to repurpose the mundane into some kind of sublime.
I present these small paintings floating among each other the way memories indiscriminately hang in our mind playing hide and seek with us. In an era where big and fast is the dominant form, through this series I want to express small and slow as a valid norm. As AI shows up in our rearview mirror, I want to emphasize human intelligence and emotions. Our post-industrial civilization raises fears of losing control of our lives and societies, of having machines run our lives.
In this series, I question the possibility of art saving our world by embellishing it, making it more…Human. A bit like the plant or the flower that is going to grow in the cracks of concrete making a statement of resilience, I’m picking the battle of David against Goliath and hoping for the best.
David Gista was born and raised in Paris, and now divides his time between France and the United States, having established his artistic career on both continents. Gista studied art at the École national supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work is very often about books, libraries, and our relationship to knowledge and information in the digital era.
