Continuing the year-long “Creatives of Color” program designed to celebrate BIPOC artists, WNDR Museum and The New Vanguard today announced that Chicago-based calligraffiti artist Tubszilla will debut “Ètica” in a dedicated space at WNDR Museum beginning May 19. As the third featured artist in the series following Nikko Washington and Chelsey C. Sanders (Alex Carter), “Ètnica” is an immersive photography experience featuring portraits of every class of workers within Latin neighborhoods throughout Chicago, from entrepreneurs to street mechanics and vendors.

Tubs is best known for his unique medium of calligraffiti, a combination of traditional form calligraphy and graffiti hand styling on outdoor canvases throughout the city of Chicago. In this site-specific installation at WNDR Museum, large scale portrait photography is illustrated with his iconic calligraphy hand style, paying homage to heritage, family customs and the effort it takes to reach success in the city. Tubs sets the scene of the installation in a living room, demonstrating how a business often starts at home with the family.

“Being an artist that started practicing at home, it is a powerful moment to have the opportunity to share my story at such an incredible scale as it hovers over WNDR Museum’s guests,” said artist Tubszilla. “Each aspect of creative process for Ètica has been an exciting journey.”

Tubszilla comes from a family of artists. Although his father and mother are both painters, his mother first introduced him to calligraphy at a young age, which started his fascination with letter forms. His work can be found throughout Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Mexico, and he has collaborated with brands including Adidas, Nickelodeon and NASCAR.

Designed to amplify the experience of the museum and to further The New Vanguard’s mission of providing resources that accelerate each artists’ craft, “Creatives of Color” was conceptualized to support and uplift Chicago’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) creatives. Throughout the year-long partnership, each of the four featured artists are given seven weeks to scale their platforms, build authentic and inclusive narratives and share their work, story and impact with WNDR Museum visitors through a variety of touchpoints including panel discussions, custom merchandise, special events and more.
