Opening Thursday, May 4th, from 6PM - 9:30PM
Save the Date! Join us for “Spirit Work” on Thursday, May 4th from 6-9:30PM. The MCA is proud to collaborate with Heaven Gallery & Equity Arts & Tribe for an In Conversation In the Community & Healing House titled Spirit Work.
Gearing up for the summer, we begin unpacking Chicago’s history with an intergenerational conversation covering the spirit of house music and the knowledge passed along from pioneers to today’s contemporaries.
Spirit Work seeks to create a bridge between House music pioneers and emerging Chicago DJ’s to carry this cultural heritage into the future. The panel will bring together Robin Williams, the legendary creator of The Warehouse and the Music Box, David Chavez (Future Rootz), M-Dok (Tribe), Rae Chardonnay (Party Noire) and Blestonio (Fortune), moderated by Abra Johnson.
As cultural workers and leaders, how do we create spaces for healing and liberation through House music? Healing House started in 2019 pre-pandemic by Heaven Gallery to reframe House music dancing as wellness outside of late-night hours and not centered around alcohol. This series organically re-emerged at the end of CBSCM panels with DJ Duane Powell that turned the gallery into an early-night dance party.
Come for a full evening of discussion and dancing!
5:30PM – Doors open
6-7:30PM – Panel Discussion
7:30-9PM – Healthy House Dance Party with DJ Syko
This program is organized in collaboration with Alma Wieser and Francine Almeda from Heaven Gallery/Equity Arts, Mdok from Tribe and Otez Gary, Community Engagement Manager & Ari Reyes, Community Engagement Intern with the Community Engagement Team at the MCA.
