Dancing the Twist in Bamako
@ Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago
5550 S Greenwood Ave, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Thursday, May 25th, from 6PM - 8PM
Join us for a free film screening of Robert Guédiguian’s 2021 film Dancing the Twist in Bamako, presented in conjunction with the exhibition not all realisms: photography, Africa, and the long 1960s.
Alice Da Luz stars as Lara, an independent woman from the countryside, and Stéphane Bak as a young revolutionary, Samba, in 1960s Mali. In the film, Mali is a country leaning into a newly realized independence; Dancing the Twist in Bamako connects the idealism and fire of youth with the hard-headedness of deeply seated traditions and values, visiting this era through the individual lives and stories of the folks who lived it. This film brings to life—in full color—the spirit of the black and white photographs by Malick Sidibé and so many others on display in not all realisms.
FREE, open to all.
