“We’re rooted here, and they can’t pull us up.” Harriet Tubman

As aptly noted in a Tides perspective on Black Philanthropy, Black giving has been around for centuries and rooted in traditional African communal systems that existed long before colonization. The same report also references the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s report “Black households give 25% more of their income annually than white households, and nearly two-thirds of African- American households donate to organizations and cusses, totaling $11 billion each year.” The richness of Black philanthropy is particularly important to us because many of the untold stories of extraordinary Black people who have singularly and collectively banded together to support Black people and Black communities are Black Chicagoans. Join us for an evening of celebration and storytelling about the everyday acts of philanthropy (giving circles, tithing, federated campaigns, volunteerism, trunk and rent parties) that kept us as a community and city moving forward during good and rough times.
