@ Jackson Park's Wooded Island
Stephen's Bridge, Jackson Park, Chicago, IL 60649
Opening Saturday, September 24th, from 4PM - 6PM
On view through Sunday, September 25th
IN PLACE: DRAWING YOU OUTSIDE invites participants to experience nature, art, dance, and music on Jackson Park’s Wooded Island and in the Garden of the Phoenix.
Dance artist Irene Hsiao and visual artist Christine Forni activate the island’s nature walks, Skylanding by Yoko Ono, and the Garden of the Phoenix with drawing, dance, and music.
Irene Hsiao and Christine Forni bring their participatory practices together to create In Place: Drawing You Outside on September 24 and 25, 2022 on Jackson Park’s Wooded Island and in the Garden of the Phoenix.
Each two-hour performance invites participants to experience nature by creating art. Beginning on the Stephen’s Bridge entrance at the southern tip of the Wooded Island, visual artist Christine Forni guides the audience to draw and write about their experiences using charcoal handmade from fallen branches in Chicago and leads them through the Island’s wooded trails to draw light, sound, and the spaces in between, Along the walk, at Yoko Ono’s Skylanding sculpture, and in the Garden of the Phoenix, the audience will discover ephemeral performances created by dance artist Irene Hsiao with dancers Helen Lee, Amanda Maraist, Wannapa P-Eubanks, and Darling “Shear” Squire and musicians Menghua Guan (Saturday 9/24 only), olula negre, and Scott Rubin.
Together performers and participants will activate the Wooded Island through collective and collaborative artmaking. Art supplies will be provided and each performance will end with participants and performers sharing their work with one another. Artworks created during In Place: Drawing You Outside will be featured at High Concept Labs and in Christine’s Studio #421 during Mana Contemporary’s Open House from noon to 4pm on October 16, 2022.
This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency and by an Individual Artists Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events and was made possible with the support of Louise McCurry, Karen Szjyka, the Jackson Park Advisory Council, and the Chicago Park District.
